I received a single track to review for Pilotlight, their new single “South”. It is very good. I don’t like it. People familiar with my idiotic review “style” know that these two states can exist for me quite frequently. The song is very well produced. Haunting guitar lines, pretty drumming and a beautiful voice that sounds like autumn leaves being crumbled into honey…that’s not the kind of music I like. The fact that they have good (if somewhat sappy) lyrics and the fact that he has one of those voices that goes from cracked “I’m almost in tears” to falsetto is also bound to win them fans. I don’t want that, I want people to sound like they’re slaughtering animals  or doing battle with large robots when they sing.

At the end of the day, I am prepared to admit that (yet again) this is simply a case of a good band’s record falling into the hands of a bad reviewer. Glasstone have a winner on their hands here (if there is any justice) and Pilotlight should soon be ascending to indie heaven with Coldplay and Sigur Ros…see for yourself at (http://www.myspace.com/glasstonerecordings)

I’m off to listen to some Supersilent.
