As soon as I saw the album art for this I knew I was going to love it. It made me think of a film that should exist at the midway point between Tron and Dark Star but doesn’t. Musically neither of these films gets a look in (which is probably for the best) as the album straddles a finely balanced axis between ambient, noise and drone. It does this by smoothing away some of the harsher edges of noise, taking on the flat-line compositional structure of drone (but with a much more musical inclination) and giving you the atmospheric and emotional reaction that you get with good ambient music. Not only does it do a fine balancing act between these different genres (also throwing in nods to electronica and neo-classical amongst others) but it also gyroscopes between light and dark in tone. This kind of fine handling means that the whole thing is totally absorbing (provided you’re not listening to it through some shitty laptop or monitor speakers) and becomes more engrossing each time you play it. It claims at the bottom of the Bandcamp page to be sold out on 8 Track but coming soon on VHS, something I really hope is true.
Can it get better ? Oh yes. It’s free.
