Jack Hayter – The West Beach / O, Dreamland ! (Audio Antihero)

Published on October 26th, 2012

Jack Hayter writes whimsical, heartfelt folk with equal measures of sincerity and irony. After reviewing the well received “I Stole The Cutty Sark” I assumed that I wouldn’t be called upon to review anymore of his releases, because I made such a fuss about not liking his voice. So this one was delivered unto me on the promise that it’s instrumental, by which James Hallaman (chief of Audio Antihero) clearly meant “It has instruments on it”. The opening track is a nice nit of noisy folk, with scratchy guitar strings and wheezy accordions and Jack’s inimitable voice. If you like folk or ballads then you’ll enjoy this.

Much more to my liking was the B side “O,Dreamland” which is like walking down Blackpool pier while extremely drunk. Woozy acoustic guitar is augmented with incidental noises leading to an intimate and cinematic experience. This release is part of the ongoing Sisters of St.Anthony series, which basically involves him releasing a single a month for a whole year and is available on November 5th.
