Opening with some tape hiss for 30 seconds is a pretty sure way to get my attention. That’s the nature of the stupid world we live in. Blank spaces and silence are so rare now that it holds some innate appeal. Marblemouth clearly agrees with me, writing such shy tunes that I was quite shocked when he decided to hit the distortion pedal three minutes in to “Doe Eyes”. His tremulous voice and basic backing band are very charming and provide a suitably withdrawn canvas for his personal lyrics. It’s all very 90’s indie rock but the arrangement and presentation mean it sounds personable rather than dated. Think Slint with a hangover or Guided By Voices but making sense. I could probably go on at length about this release but I don’t think they would want me to.
