Sorry. I got carried away because I got to write so many exciting words in one headline. I don’t actually like this album. I feel cheated because the appetizer blurb that came with the press release mentioned that this band were a bit like Slayer. Slayer are awesome. I want to write a thousand words right now about King and Hannemans crazed nonsensical guitar solos and Dave Lombardo’s powerful wrists but I’m not allowed because as much as Nuclear Death Terror occasionally resemble the Big Four’s second best band, it doesn’t actually help. What it does is give you an appetite that N.D.T’s one dimensional approach cannot possibly satisfy. One of the defining features of the current crust-punk explosion seems to be paper thin production values. Presumably this is the “punk” part of the equation. Well the production on this record is virtually non-existent, meaning songs all sound the same. The fact that the same chords and progressions are recycled over and over also doesn’t help and neither does the fact that the energetic drumming is also exactly the same from song to song. It’s like deja vu but made of stinky metal.
So I come back to what I said about crust punk when reviewing Martyrdod. I still haven’t heard a better example than Alpinist and the more I hear, the more I question Southern Lord’s decision making skills. What’s the point in releasing so many records that sound the same ? I’m not saying that in the way your Dad does when he hears drum n bass, I actually know what I’m talking about (sort of) and Martyrdod and N.D.T really do sound the same. Good name though.
