Douglas Rushkoff is an author, professor, media theorist, journalist, as well as a keyboardist for the industrial band PsychicTV. His books include Media Virus, Coercion, Nothing Sacred: The Truth About Judaism (a book which opened up the question of Open Source Judaism), Exit Strategy (an online collaborative novel), and a monthly comic book, Testament. He founded the Narrative Lab at New York University’s Interactive Telecommunications Program, a space which seeks to explore the relationship of narrative to media in an age of interactive technology.

The girl interrupting Rushkoff was kind of annoying. She’s sounds really sweet and genuine and keen but needs to let him talk. Even an “Oh yeah” kind of screws up the flow with the audio back and forth.
This podcast is excellent.
Now I feel terrible about that earlier comment. On a second listening she was fine.
It’s difficult in the case of that ep. I was in Brighton, Mort in Scotland, Claire in Paris and Doug in New york, which causes time delay problems.
Hahaha, I felt awful listening to it myself because it sounded like I was interrupting as well, but the time delays made it really difficult for me to tell when was an appropriate time to ask a question.

Presumably you’d be happy to let “the state’s” Police stop you being murdered or let “the state’s” Doctors and ambulances assist you after an accident. There was so much I appreciated about this episode, which has been sitting in my iPod waaayyyyy too long. I was especially pleased to hear Rushkoff remind listeners of the importance and talent of trained journalists… I feel like the counterculture will often criticize all forms of mainstream media, forgetting that there are actually journalists out there working for major networks and newspapers (especially newspapers) that still have integrity. Independent media is important, of course, but it’s not the same as those who travel into the middle east or other war zones to tell the world what’s really going on.
Oh, and I also really liked Rushkoff’s take on conspiracy theory, used as a means of avoiding the examination and criticism of systematic problems. Reading crazy statements like those of Mr. Fuckthestate make this seem all the more true to me… and the most hardcore, whacked out conspiracy theorists I’ve met seem to be those who’ve solely educated themselves on the internet, which sadly, does not teach critical thinking skills.
